by G. Ph. Telemann

This intermezzo was one of Telemann’s greatest successes in the opera genre. It was usual at the time to intercalate comical themes, with lighter music, during the intervals of great tragedies. Pimpinone was composed in 1725 to be presented during the intervals of the opera Der Geduldige Socrates.

The libretto, by Johann Philipp Praetorius, was based on the operetta plot put into music 15 years earlier by Albinoni (Astarto). It was composed eight years before La Serva Padrona, by Pergolesi, whose plot is similar, and, currently, better known. In our version we have kept the arias in Italian, as in the original, but we have substituted the recitatives in German for the version in Portuguese
